A table bathed in soft morning light. Simply placing a wooden plate on it makes your usual breakfast seem just a little more "organized." The fragrant smell of freshly baked bread blends with the scent of wood, and your hands, holding the cup, relax. When our editorial team first held this "hassun" in their hands, we were surprised by its soft, smooth wood surface.

 

 

Above all, it really brings out the flavor of the food.
Rather than "making the food stand out," it's more like "the food and the wood are breathing together."

 

The luxury of using a one-of-a-kind item every day

 

 

This plate is no ordinary thing.
First of all, the materials are special. Hardwoods - chestnut, maple, cherry, and pagoda tree - are used. Each piece takes advantage of the unique color and grain of each tree, allowing you to enjoy a different look.

 

 

Each piece has its bark (the edge of the wood) left intact, as if a fragment of the tree's life is dwelling in the table. Rather than forcing a shape, the human hand has only come a little closer to the shape the wood wanted to be -- this is the pure beauty that lies within these pieces.

 

 

Winner of the Good Design Award 2024

 

What's great for users is that its beauty lasts a long time. The glass coating means you can use it without worrying about oil or sauce stains. The coating meets food hygiene standards, so you can safely place sashimi or fruit on it.
The glass-like wooden plate "Hachisun for One Person," made from a single piece of hardwood, also won the Good Design Award in 2024.

 

 

Each one is individually packaged in a craft box. No two are the same, making them special.

 

Making the most of the individuality of each piece of wood

 

This vessel was created by Ikuji Wood, a sawmill in Tanba City, Hyogo Prefecture.
When I visited the workshop, the first thing that surprised me was the sound. It wasn't the sound of machinery or the shouts of workers, but the faint breathing sound of wood touching wood.
In the back of the sawmill, craftsmen faced a single log, quietly planeing it as if listening to the sound of the wood.

 

 

Everything from purchasing the logs to finishing is done here. Each piece of wood is carefully examined, and the grain, surface, and even the "edges" - the edges of the wood - are left as natural as possible. This does not mean that no effort is spared, but rather that we believe in the "natural beauty of wood - its wildness." Not overly trimmed. Not ornamented. And yet, beautiful tableware is born here.
